Ankle Injuries

What are ankle injuries?

Ankle injuries include any injury including sprains, muscle or tendon strains, and fractures in the ankle region.

What causes ankle injuries?

The most common causes for an ankle injury to occur are from tripping or falling, landing poorly after a jump, walking or running on uneven surfaces, twisting or rotating the ankle, or rolling the ankle.

Common symptoms:

  • Sudden and severe ankle pain
  • Sporadic pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Weakness and instability in the ankle
  • Inability to walk or bear weight on the injured ankle

How do we treat you?

We will perform a physical examination and ask you about your symptoms. We’ll evaluate your health history and if conservative treatment fails, we may recommend further solutions.

Usually, ankle pain can be treated conservatively by:

  • Resting to allow for full healing
  • Elevating the injured ankle
  • Icing the injury
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Bracing the ankle
  • Over-the-counter anti-inflammatories
